Helpful Terms

Premium: The monthly cost of your health plan. A high-deductible insurance plan usually has a low monthly premium, which may be more affordable for those with few health issues. If someone has several health costs each year, they might prefer a low-deductible plan with a higher monthly premium.

Deductible: The amount you are required to pay during a coverage period before your health insurance plan kicks in. A coverage period is usually one year. Some health services may be subject to your deductible, while others are not. This detail varies with each health plan.

Coinsurance: Your share of the costs of a covered health service, calculated as a percent of the total amount for the service. For example, if you have a 20% coinsurance for an office visit that costs $100, your fee will be $20. The insurance company pays the rest, unless you haven’t met your deductible yet.

Copayment: Also called “co-pay”, a fixed amount you pay for a health care service at the time of the visit. The co-pay amount is determined by your insurance plan and may vary by the type of health care service you receive. For example, in your insurance plan, you may be responsible for a $50 co-pay to see a specialist.
